	abstract = "A 3.4-m Ebert spectrograph, with its supplementary direct-reading head, was bought for this laboratory with certain requirements in mind:<P></P>&#8226; It should be a versatile photographic instrument, with high resolution and an optical system that would permit the variation of wavelength ranges and spectral orders, and the interchange of gratings.<P></P>&#8226; The instrument should provide a direct-reading head as an alternative to the photographic camera such that the changeover from photographic to direct-reading operation should be a simple and rapid procedure.<P></P>&#8226; It should be possible to alter the direct-reading program at will and with a minimum of trouble.",
