Solid powdered standards used for calibration in quantitative spectrochemical analysis have to be prepared by careful weighing of known quantities of substances that contain the elements under analysis and dilution with the appropriate matrix. This matrix contains the internal standard in some cases. In other cases the internal standard is added to the mixture prior to dilution with the matrix.
