It is common practice to use some sort of lens system between the arc-spark stand and the spectrograph in spectrochemical analyses. In many instances the lens closest to the arc gap receives considerable spatter from the arc and gradually deteriorates. A metal shield, shown in Figure
1, limits the unobstructed path between the arc gap and the lens to the cone required by the optical arrangement. This reduces the number of spatter particles hitting the lens, especially the destructive heavy particles which require trajectories that are cut off by the shield. The device
also aids in keeping dust off the lens.
