Abstract:

The Methods Section of the New York Customs Laboratory was given the responsibility of setting up and using the spectrograph in order to relieve the Metallurgical Section of an enormous load of work. This work load is due in part to a tremendous variety of samples submitted for analysis, both qualitative and quantitative. In addition, the Tariff Act of 1930, which is our bible, requires that we obtain, on request by the proper Customs officials, quantitative values, no matter how small.
