A function that predicted product cubic foot volume given individual tree dbh, product length, and minimum and maximum scaling diameters was optimized over dbh by using numerical techniques. This method yielded higher estimates of optimum dbh than a method reported by A. J. Martin in 1983. North. J. Appl. For. 3:60-61, September 1984.
