Abstract:
The arguments of Strauss et al. (this issue) have reinforced my belief that the Forest Stewardship Council's embrace of genetic modification (GM) technology would be ill advised. More research is needed to identify the direct and indirect social, economic, and ecological implications at all scales of the introduction of GM technology. GM research must be carried out under high levels of security, and we must gain more insights, through the research process, of who may benefit when, to what degree, and at what costs to others. Keywords: biotechnology; entomology and pathology; ethics; genetics; research; silviculture; environmental management; forest; forest management; forest resources; forestry; forestry research; forestry science; natural resources; natural resource management
