Over the past five years, the Oregon Department of Forestry has developed a new management plan for state forests in northwest Oregon. The approach results in health, productive, sustainable forest ecosystems and promotes the view that forest values such as timber and wildlife are compatible. Forest landscapes must be designed for wildlife habitat diversity, strategies must be operationally feasible, and the plan must be flexible enough to allow forest managers to address changes. Careful monitoring and an adaptive management approach are key to the plan's success over time.
