Abstract:

In New England, municipalities control substantial amounts of forestland that could benefit from management. A survey of municipalities in Massachusetts estimated that they administer some 288,000 acres. Many municipal officials are interested in placing their land under forest management, but are not sure how to obtain forestry information. Urban and community forestry programs operated by the states can provide a valuable service to communities, helping municipal officials understand and evaluate forest-management options.
