Pipelines in Forested Wetlands: Cross Drainage Needed to Prevent Timber Damage
Large natural gas and petroleum pipelines that cross forested wetlands block normal water flow, raising the water table on the upslope side, which significantly reduces growth or even kills the trees. Such damage has been prevented on the Chippewa National Forest in north-central Minnesota by excavating ditches during construction to provide the necessary cross drainage.
