Volume of Wood, Bark, and Needles After Clearcutting a Lodgepole Pine Stand

Abstract:

Residual volumes of wood, bark, and needles were obtained in a lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl.) stand after clearcutting to a 6-inch-diameter top. The stand contained 6,174.5 cubic feet per acre of live material to a 6-inch top, plus 1,040.0 cubic feet per acre of standing dead material also to a 6-inch top. A total of 4,333.1 cubic feet of residue per acre, excluding needles, remained after logging. Of this residue, 3,567.0 cubic feet, or 82.3 percent of the total, was more than 3.0 inches in diameter, with an average bark content of 8.2 percent. Material between 0.6 inch and 3.0 inches in diameter accounted for a further 14.9 percent, with a mean bark content of 13.1 percent.
