Applying Liebig's Law of the Minimum to the Management of Ponderosa Pine
Liebig's Law of the Minimum (which states that yield is limited by the factor which is in relative minimum) is recommended as a useful concept for the management of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws.) in eastern Washington and eastern Oregon. Five conditions (crown development, soil moisture supply, competition from understory vegetation, soil nutrients, and limiting ecotypes of ponderosa pine) are considered to be important in limiting growth and the application of Liebig's Law. An analogy is presented that tells how wheat farmers in the Big Bend region of eastern Washington have realized a tenfold increase in production by means of a series of developments comparable with those recommended for the management of ponderosa pine.
