Spruce Budworm Larvae Damage Western Larch Cones and Seeds

In the northern Rocky Mountains, spruce budworm larvae do not typically feed on female cones of coniferous trees. Many western larch (Larix occidentalis Nutt.) cones, however, were damaged by spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana [Clem.]) larvae in 1964. Severity of damage was variable. Most cones were merely scored or superficially, mined. Portions of bracts, scales, and seeds of many cones were damaged or consumed. A few cones were heavily damaged--most of the bracts, scales, and seeds were either chewed or consumed and the central axis was destroyed. It appears that larvae move to the cones after feeding for a time on the foliage. The extent of damage is not known.
