Abstract:

The western states produced about 7,800,000 Christmas trees in 1964, nearly a quarter of the national total. Montana and Washington were the top producers, Oregon rated third. Douglas-fir accounted for about 80 percent of the total cut. The true firs were next in importance. California was the principal outlet for trees produced in Oregon and Washington. Montana's principal markets were the Midwest and the southern states west of the Mississippi. An important trend was increased sales of cultured trees and decline of wild trees.
