Abstract:

This mechanized increment borer for hardwoods utilizes a modified plug cutter as the cutterhead and a battery powered impact wrench as the power unit. It is a light, highly portable coring tool able to penetrate hardwoods at a rate of 2 to 3 inches per minute and has been utilized to drill completely through trees as large as 24 inches in diameter. Nondestructive sampling of both hardwoods and softwoods is feasible with this versatile power borer.
