Forest Resources and Lumber Industry of Sweden
The author was sent to northern Europe in October of 1945 on a special assignment for the U. S. Department of State to make brief studies of wartime developments and current conditions regarding forest resources, lumber industry, and foreign commerce in Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark. During this period he was also in cooperation with the Timber Sub-Committee of the Emergency Economic Committee for Europe and with American Military Government in Germany. These studies are now complete and the author has returned to the United States. The present paper is the first in a series dealing with present conditions regarding forest resources and lumber industry in the northern European countries. The author is indebted to men in the industry, government officials, and to professional foresters of these countries for their wholehearted cooperation in the collection of the material which has made these studies possible.
