Open forest ranges in the Southeast have been used for grazing since the days of the Spanish conquistadores, but until recently little range research has been done. The development of improved range practices in this area offers a possibility of increasing needed beef production and income from cutover lands. Grazing in the pine forests of the Coastal Plain should not be confused with that in hardwood forests where considerable damage might be done by browsing. The following article describes two of the main native forage types in sontheastern pine forests and lists some range grazing studies now under way.
