Effect of Cutting Mature Lodgepole-Pine Stands on Rainfall Interception
Studies, both here and abroad, have revealed that as much as one-third of the total rainfall may be intercepted and evaporated from tree crowns. With losses as great as this it is apparent that rainfall interception is a vital factor in proper watershed management, whether the object of such management is increased water yield or control of erosion and floods. The study described herein was designed to measure the amount of rainfall reaching the soil in mature stands of lodgepole pine, and to determine how this amount is modified by various intensities of timber cutting.
