Abstract:

An imaginary conversation on an imaginary logging operation of some imaginary, but very typical foresters, anywhere in the West. A forest supervisor, a regional office inspector, a college professor, a researcher, and a logging superintendent meet in a ponderosa pine forest and discuss forest management. The relative merits of heavy and of light selection cutting are debated and the principles of the maturity selection system are outlined. Thus, in an authoritative and yet novel presentation recent developments in one progressive school of thought in the field of ponderosa pine silviculture and economics are given to our readers.
