Joseph Trimble Rothrock: The Father of Forestry in Pennsylvania
Abstract:Dr. Joseph Trimble Rothrock was born in Pennsylvania April 9, 1839. His interest in forestry antedated by many years the advent of the first technically trained American forester. One of that group of pioneers whose early efforts in behalf of conservation have left lasting imprints on the country's attitude towards its renewable natural resources, Dr. Rothrock was actually and literally "the father of forestry in Pennsylvania." This estimate of his character and accomplishments was written by one who knew him well and who was associated with him intimately and professionally for more than twenty years. Mr. Wirt was the first technically trained forester employed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. His article commemorates the one-hundredth anniversary of Dr. Rothrock's birth.
