Growth in Virgin Ponderosa Pine Stands in Central Idaho

Abstract:It is commonly believed that no significant net growth occurs in virgin stands. To determine the accuracy of this empirical observation as applied to ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) in central Idaho, a series of permanent sample plots have been maintained and remeasured periodically since 1913. These plots now provide data on growth and development of both the stand and the individual trees.
