Butt-Log Profile Equations

Several mathematical models were developed that describe the shape of butt logs and can be used to calculate their volumes. Three methods of developing profile equations were tested. The best method was to use the differentials of the individual terms of an unbiased volume estimator plus information about log shape to form the equation. The equation was then conditioned so that its volume estimates were compatible with the estimator. Several techniques for developing profile equations are described.
