An application of Johnson's SBB distribution to growth and yield prediction is presented. The mathematical techniques of describing stand structure and projecting yield for thinned and unthinned stands of loblolly pine in plantations are detailed. In addition, the assumptions employed in applying the techniques are discussed. The advantage of the bivariate approach to modeling thinning decisions is that height enters the removal decisions for low thinning which is more reflective of the decision process involved in an operational thinning.
