Notes: Prediction of Mid-Term from Short-Term Fertilizer Responses for Southern Pine Plantations
For nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and N + P fertilization, models are presented for predicting 5- and 8-year volume responses from 2- and 5-year responses. The r² ranges from 0.51 to 0.85. Extrapolations over 3 years are more precise than over 6. Prediction of 5-year response is more precise for N and N + P than for P. Prediction of 8-year response is more precise for N + P than for N or P. Inclusion of site and stand conditions as additional independent variables increases the R² to the range 0.61 to 0.92. Conditions significantly affecting continuing response include initial nutrient levels, growth rate, and drainage class. Forest Sci. 30:264-269.
