Optimum Allocation in Stratified Sampling of Forest Populations on Successive Occasions

The optimum allocation of resources to strata is considered when sampling on two successive occasions. Expressions are presented for the optimum number of remeasured and new plots when only one parameter, typically standing volume, is of interest. The proportion of remeasured plots is shown to depend on the correlation between successive measurements and the cost of measuring an old plot relative to that of a new plot. A mathematical programming approach is demonstrated for the situation when several parameters are to be estimated. Forest Sci. 27:730-738.
