Comparison of Point and Plot Sampling Basal Area Estimators

The precision of point and plot sampling basal area estimators is compared for sampling in three spatial patterns: clumped, random, and square lattice. The variances of the point and plot basal area estimators are developed in a fashion that allows all three spatial patterns to be handled in the same framework and includes diameter distribution as a general, discrete probability function. Point sampling is shown to be more precise for basal area estimation in clumped and random stands, while plot sampling is more precise in square lattice stands. Forest Sci. 27:42-48.
