abstract = "The ability to estimate the probability of root contacts is required as a basis for the development of any realistic model of root rot dynamics for evaluation of control measures. The probability of such contacts is estimated from the size and orientation of the roots, using a method based on vector dot products. A small modification of the relationships allows calculation of the probability that roots will be within a given distance of each other, for use in competition studies.
