Streaks of compression wood were observed in western hemlock lumber. These streaks were not associated with leaning stems, but they were observed to initiate at knots and to extend downwards for as much as 4 meters. This observation suggests that transportable auxin may play a role in compression wood induction. Forest Sci. 25:129-131.
