A Preliminary Hazard Rating of Grand Fir Stands for Mortality by the Fir Engraver

A stand hazard index (SHR) was developed to rate grand fir stands for tree mortality due to the fir engraver. The stand hazard index is a function of Crown Competition Factor and tree species diversity. The index showed a strong correlation with the number of trees killed by the fir engraver during a 3-year period. This model (SHR) should assist forest managers in assigning management priorities for the application of cultural treatments to reduce or prevent engraver-caused mortality. Forest Sci. 23:103-110.
