Mycorrhizae of Exotic Trees in the Peruvian Andes and Synthesis of Ectomycorrhizae on Mexican Pines

Roots of various exotic trees of different ages growing in the naturally treeless, semiarid southern Andes of Peru (between 3050 and 4160 m elevation) were examined for mycorrhizae. Pinus radiata, P. oocarpa, P. patula, P. halepensis, P. montezumae, and Eucalyptus globulus were all heavily ectomycorrhizal, apparently with several species of Basidiomycetes. Ectendomycorrhizae occurred on roots of P. radiata, P. oocarpa, and P. patula at 4160 m elevation. Cupressus macrocarpa had arbuscular endomycorrhizae. In anticipation of afforestation efforts with Mexican pines in this region, pure culture tests for ectomycorrhizal development were performed on these pines. Pisolithus tinctorius, Thelephora terrestris, and Cenococcum graniforme formed ectomycorrhizae on and stimulated growth of Pinus michoacana, P. teocote, P. rudis, P. pseudostrobus, P. ayacahuite, and P. leiophylla. Nonmycorrhizal seedlings of these pine species grew poorly. Forest Sci. 21:353-358.
