N2 - A competition ratio, R, is shown to be a measure of tree vigor and an alternative to crown class in simulated forest growth studies. R is the proportion of a tree's competitive influence zone overlapped by the zone of the average competing tree. Trees with R < 0.23 emulate seasonal growth patterns of dominant trees, and with R > 0.40 the patterns of suppressed trees. R, like crown class, is dynamic and is considered here as a finite Markov process. Transitional probability matrices based on samples of over 1700 trees are presented for 4- and 6-yr periods. Tests using independent data from six ΒΌ acre (0.10 ha) plots indicate these matrices over-estimate mortality rates. Nevertheless, knowledge of a tree's current R-class and its probability of change can lead to improved estimates of periodic mortality in simulated pine plantations. Forest Sci. 21:46-51.
