Notes: Tree Strata Biomass of Subalpine Spruc1e-fir Stands in Southwestern Colorado

Total tree strata biomass and individual tree components were estimated by regression for the subalpine Engelmann spruce-subalpine fir association in Colorado. Equations were based on 29 felled Engelmann spruce trees from four locations in the San Juan National Forest. D² (diameter at breast height²) proved to be the most useful independent variable and provided R² values from 0.88 to 0.98 depending on the component estimated. Biomass per unit area as estimated from number of trees per plot and plot size represented an upper elevational limit for tree strata biomass values in commercial forest types of North America.
