Notes: Estimating Relative Water Content of Leaves Without Oven Drying
If leaf fresh weight and fully turgid weight are measured, then relative water content can be estimated using an estimate of oven dry weight based on the average ratio of oven dry over turgid weights previously determined for that species. The error in estimated relative water content of a leaf is shown mathematically to depend on (1) the difference between average ratio and the true oven dry over turgid weight ratio for the leaf, and (2) the true relative water content. Field measurements on leaf samples of four tree species showed that the expected error can be quite small, provided that procedures are properly standardized. Forest Sci. 20:101-103.
