Notes: Development of Hypoxylon mammatum Cankers on Artificially Shaded Aspen Stems

Hypoxylon cankers on quaking aspen developed and enlarged more rapidly when shaded than when exposed to full light. Different degrees of shading were provided by enclosing portions of aspen stems in wooden frames covered with fabrics of different densities. Conidlospores and ascospores were produced on both shaded and unshaded cankers. Results confirm prior field observations that Hypoxylon-infected aspens die more rapidly under shaded growing conditions. Forest Sci. 18:316-318.
