Greenhouse Pot Experiments With Pine Seedlings: Methods for Reducing Variability

Abstract:

Analyses of variance were made of a series of fertilizer experiments with pine seedlings grown in greenhouse pots. Variability of dry matter yields and nutrient uptake was evaluated in terms of standard deviation (SD) per pot and coefficients of variability (CV) calculated from the error mean squares. CV usually decreased markedly with increase in yields per pot; SD sometimes also decreased with increased yield but more often it increased. SD and CV decreased with method of establishing the plants in pots of soil as follows: transplanting a single year-old, field nursery-grown seedling in a pot ยป direct seeding to leave 4 to 6 seedlings per pot > transplanting 4 to 6 germinated seedlings per pot. The last method plus growth of the seedlings to yields of at least 25 g dry weight of tops per pot resulted in a CV of 5 to 10 percent. Values for SD and CV were usually higher for roots than for top growth and were higher for nutrient uptake than for dry matter. Forest Sci. 16:432-441.
