N2 - Numerical solutions of the time-dependent diffusion equation were used to evaluate the influence of species and size on drying rates of heartwood of six tree species--four of them common forest fuels and two representing extremes of microstructures in heartwood. Cylindrical symmetry with constant boundary conditions was assumed, so that the diffusion reduced to a one-dimensional case. Results indicate that the drying rate is not purely an exponential decay. The ratio of response time of the fuels to the radius squared is nearly constant for a given species at any given power of 1/e. Moisture profiles within the fuel show orderly collapse of gradient for all cases when scaled by the radius and response time. Forest Sci. 16:57-63.
