Notes: Growth of Bud Scales and Leaves During the Winter
Bud scales and leaves grow in every month of the winter in the vicinity of Raleigh, North Carolina. Literature indicates that growth and metabolism goes on in winter buds even in the more northern latitudes of Canada and Russia. The innermost bud scales of hickory grow 4 cm or more. Bud scales must be looked upon as active participants in the processes of winter bud growth and development and not merely as inert protective organs.
