Nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbohydrate contents in expanding and 1-year-old shoots of Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco seedlings were compared at intervals preceding and following bud break. Year-old shoots appear to supply substantial amounts of these materials to new growth in the spring. Such movement would appear to illustrate the potential value of reserve accumulation to support vigorous new shoot growth on newly outplanted seedlings.
