Loss of Douglas-Fir Seed Viability During Cone Storage

Abstract:

Cones of Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco were stored at 0°, 10° and 20°C with moisture contents of 20, 40 and 60 percent for 4, 8 and 16 weeks in a factorial study. Germination tests, X-ray examination and mold counts were conducted on extracted seed. Storage of cones with 60 percent moisture at 0°C resulted in slight losses of seed viability which increased to full loss when storage was for 4 weeks at 20°C. Cones of this moisture content should be processed as soon as possible. Cones of 40 percent moisture or less can be stored at temperature of 10°C or less with no significant loss in seed viability. Cones of 20 percent moisture content or greater exhibited a significant seed viability loss when stored at 20°C. A hypothesis is introduced implicating microfloral action in the destruction of seed during cone storage.
