Abstract:

Sub-Saharan Africa has one of the highest incidences of HIV infection in the world. Recent statistics indicate that Botswana is one of the countries most affected by HIV and AIDS. A number of theories have been offered to explain the current statistics of the disease. One theory not yet explored is the relationship between sexually compulsive behavior and HIV infection. The Sexual Addiction Screening Test (SAST) was administered to a sample of Batswana males (n = 52). The SAST score of Batswana men is compared with already existing SAST scores of American males (n = 42). Individual items are compared to determine if either sample endorses specific behaviors more often than the other. Results indicated that Batswana males had higher mean SAST scores and endorsed specific items on the SAST more frequently than their American counterparts. However, given the limitations of the instrument and cultural considerations it is not possible to make inferences or definitive statements about this very preliminary data and its impact on the continent of Africa. Directions for future investigation are presented.
