Abstract:

Data are presented from mainland China to illustrate the differences by region, gender, and age in the methods used for suicide . Changes over time are also documented. The data support an availability hypothesis for choice of method for suicide. Differences by gender in the use of violent and nonviolent methods resemble those found in Western nations , except that the particular violent methods used are different in China .
