Transatlantic Relations: The Crisis
Abstract:In a conference on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), sponsored by the National Committee on American Foreign Policy (NCAFP), a far-ranging discussion covered the following topics: mobilizing public support in the United States for NATO; lessons to be drawn from the Libyan War; the troubled relationship between NATO and Russia; underlying tensions between the United States and Europe that may weaken NATO; global versus regional perspectives on security; the meaning of Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, especially as it relates to cyberattacks and extension of security guarantees to the Baltic states and possible future members like Georgia and Ukraine; Turkey and the European Union; the budgetary crisis and NATO; and challenges to democracy in the current global crisis.
