Abstract:

The progress of modern sport in Korea since the end of the Second World War has been striking - symbolized by the successful hosting of the Seoul Olympic Games and the co-hosting in 2002 of the FIFA World Cup. Progress can be explained essentially in terms of the exertion of political power, influence and will as the motivation to present a modern national image. In recent Korean history, as never before, sport, nationalism and politics have been tightly enmeshed.
