Abstract:

An overview of the French geographical literature on tourism reveals the main characteristics of the evolution of geography since the end of the nineteenth century, especially the shift from a natural to a social science. Obstacles to scientific progress in geography are due to epistemological archaisms, which have persisted during the twentieth century, to the social valourization of 'sedentarity', and to the inertia of academic institutions.
