In this paper Segal gives brief summaries of her 1987 paper ‘Silence is the real crime' and her 1995 paper ‘From Hiroshima to the Gulf War and after: socio‐political expressions of ambivalence', to show the effect of psychotic factors in the background to September 11. She analyses the symbolic significance and psychological impact of September 11 and in a 2005 Postscript discusses the ensuing war on Iraq.
