Abstract:
Since the widespread use of computerised collections databases and the growth of the Internet, museums have been addressing the question of how they can link to a wider network of information. There are still issues to be resolved: how best to aggregate cross-institutional data both at collection and object level; how to balance the advantages of interoperability against the individual cataloguing requirements of very diverse collections; and how best to meet the needs of the broad range of users of this information. There is now, however, another consideration, given impetus by the development of wireless networks and the potential of mobile learning. The network can be introduced into the physical space of the museum, opening up new possibilities, but presenting the challenge of integrating it into the already complex relationship between visitor and object.Document Type: Research article
