Abstract:

This paper focuses on international staffing issues in large US law firms. The differences in international staffing approaches reflect the differences in the types of expertise the firms are using in achieving their competitive advantage. Lawyers are viewed as the carriers of specific types of expertise. The choice of type of expertise needed in the foreign branches of a particular firm is explained by the firm's age, that reflects the nature of the firm's relationships with the clients. Since the analysis is made at the branch level, some country-specific variables, as well as firm-specific variables, are controlled for.
