Abstract:

This article looks at the way the home/school relationship has been restructured by the Portuguese state over the past 25 years. It is argued that, through education policy, this state has attempted to construct the â-˜responsible parentâ-™ on the basis of two forms: the collaborative parent and, more recently, the â-˜parent as partnerâ-™. In the context of what we have characterised as the â-˜simultaneous crisis and consolidation of mass schoolingâ-™ in Portugal, and on the basis of an analysis of official legislation on the home/school relationship and empirical work carried out in two Portuguese schools, we argue that a main objective of education policy has been to make parents accountable by bringing them into the education system and we produce a typology of parent forms on the basis of representations which policy-makers and schools have of parents.
