Abstract:

In this article, the author traces how a distinct literature for children is developing in Singapore. After a brief introduction to the country, noteworthy texts from the first bibliography of Singapore children's books are discussed, after which the challenges in developing a local literature are highlighted. Finally, suggestions are made concerning the protection, encouragement and maintenance of emergent children's literature.
