Cardboard as a construction material: a case study

Abstract:

A small cardboard building with a 25-year intended lifetime was developed as a live innovation project to explore and resolve the practical problems surrounding the design, fabrication and construction, costs, and use of an alternative building material. The primary aim to reduce environmental impacts was based on developing the potential of a recycled material as the main structural and cladding component that could be further recycled at the end of its working life. This case study of a small school building presents both the research and development undertaken by the project team and the practical implications of realizing this as a building for a client.

Dans le cadre d'un projet innovant conduit dans des conditions réelles, on a construit un petit bâtiment en carton prévu pour une durée de vie de 25 ans. Il s'agissait d'analyser et de résoudre des problèmes pratiques liés à la conception, à la fabrication, à la construction, au coût et à l'utilisation de matériaux de construction alternatifs. L'objectif principal, qui était de réduire l'impact sur l'environnement, s'appuyait sur le développement du potentiel d'un matériau recyclé qui serait le principal élément de structure et composant de revêtement qui pourrait être lui-même recyclé en fin de vie utile. Cette étude de cas qui porte sur un petit bâtiment scolaire présente les travaux de recherche et développement entrepris par l'équipe chargée du projet ainsi que les implications pratiques de la réalisation d'un tel bâtiment pour un client.
