Abstract:
Biodiversity is a major ecological feature and tourist attraction in protected areas. Park managers recognize the need to incorporate the principles of biodiversity conservation and sustainable tourism in their day-to-day planning and decision-making. Monitoring visitor impacts on nature-based destination areas is an essential component in tourism management. The paper suggests a monitoring framework to guide park managers in tourism planning and management. The development of the framework was informed by primary and secondary data collected from three recreational sites, namely Minnamurra Rainforest Center, Carrington Falls Reserve and Bungonia State Conservation Area - all in Southern Highlands, New South Wales. The study aimed to develop a framework that has a much wider and practical application. Keywords: monitoring; biodiversity conservation; visitor impact; protected areas; sustainable tourism
